Introduction
 
 

History :

The Department of Mass Communication was founded as a teaching and research unit under the College of Social Science and Humanities at Providence University on August 1st, 2005. As the first department of Mass Communication established in central region of Taiwan, the Department aims to develop talented students to be professional journalists, communication practitioners and scholars and thus meets the educational and professional needs of the students by combining a tradition of humanities education with training in technology in the realm of mass communication in Taiwan.

Mission:

The mission of the Department of Mass Communication at Providence University is to educate students in an interdisciplinary way that they can not only become effective practitioners in various fields of mass media by developing relevant practical skills, but they can also help the public in using the mass media to fulfill the needs of the society. The department also attempts to establish a creative and dynamic environment for the study of studies mass communication.

Features:

Mass Communication as Major Subject: Students have to take a range of basic courses in communication for a holistic knowledge and understanding of the discipline. In addition, students can choose to take advanced courses in the realms of television, radio and film. The Department also offers three areas, namely, journalism, advertising and public relations in which juniors and seniors can minor.
Multiple Teaching and Interdisciplinary Studies: The Department offers various programs in collaboration with other sister departments at Providence University which allows us not only to build a strong, broad-based academic program in mass communication, but it also encourages students to develop an interdisciplinary perspective that brings together voices of local culture and global understandings.
Internship with Media Industry: Internship with the media industry outside the classroom is strongly emphasized as one of the features of education provided by the Department. Students are encouraged to develop practical skills in media production combined with research abilities. The internship experience with the media industry both helps students strengthen their professional credentials,and sensitizes them to the needs and demands of the media professions in the context of real-life work environment in mass communication in the country.
